A Hard Lesson: Why Wearing Your Protective Gear is Non-Negotiable

A recent post over on the Reddit r/Rollerblading community hit close to home, and it’s a heavy reminder of why full protective gear is non-negotiable every single time you put your skates on.

A rider was out on a path they knew like the back of their hand. They hit a small hill, ran into an unexpected patch of mud at the bottom, and their feet slid right out. They went flying backward and slammed their head hard against the pavement.

The Unexpected Reality of Skating

It doesn’t matter if you’ve been rolling for twenty years or twenty days. Terrain changes, dirt moves, and balance shifts in a split second. A spot you skated yesterday can give you a completely different challenge today.

Most bad falls don’t happen when you’re trying a massive new trick. They happen on routine strides when a tiny detail changes under your wheels. When a feet-out fall happens, you don’t have time to react or catch yourself. Being prepared before you roll is the only thing that protects you.

Helmets: Protect Your Head First

The skater said it straight: without their helmet, they would have been in the emergency room with a severe brain injury. That’s not drama; that’s just facts.

Helmets aren’t about avoiding a bump or a scratch. They’re about protecting your long-term health so you can keep skating, living your life, and enjoying this sport for years to come. And remember, if your helmet takes a hard hit like that, it did its job. Replace it immediately—helmets are built for a single major impact.

Full Gear: Pads, Wrist Guards, and Zero Ego

The rider admitted they weren’t wearing elbow pads that day. They got lucky, but the risk was right there. Wrist guards, knee pads, and elbow pads are basic fundamentals. When you fall, your hands and joints are your body’s first line of defense.

Sometimes beginners or returning riders getting back into the sport feel a little self-conscious gearing up completely. We tell every camper who comes through our gates: throw the ego out the window. Looking geared up is a tiny price to pay for building real confidence, staying out of the hospital, and keeping your skating journey going.

Safety-First, Always

At Blading Camp, safety-first isn’t just a rule we talk about; it’s the core foundation of how we teach. We group by ability, build solid fundamentals, and make sure every rider is protected so they can push their boundaries safely.

Gear up every single roll. No exceptions. Protect yourself, support each other, and keep rolling.
